Raven Morning

Last night we had some winds, so we took our most vulnerable feeder in the house. We've already lost one and no one in town sells the kind I like anymore, so we are a bit protective. I had Zoey take it back out this morning before the sun came up. I watched her at the window and she stopped, I could tell she was listening. She came running in, yelling "Momma, Momma, Momma, come outside, quick!" Hmmmm...too frozen for bears.

When I got out there, I was greated with the most ancient sounds. We were surrounded by ravens. Ravens right above us, ravens flying to the right, ravens flying to the left. Ravens talking, talking, talking. Zoey and I were enchanted. They have such an amazing range of vocalizations. Living along the raven flyway is amazing.

The above video is a poor reproduction. I think I now have a new obsession. I am going to have to learn how to record these sounds so that you all can share this. Anyone know how to do that? Anyone know what equipment is needed?

I've no idea on the equiptment, but those sounds are really neat. They sound a little like monkeys to me.

Oh wow, I miss that sound. Homer's unofficial city-bird is the raven, and I used to find myself among flocks of them when I went x-country skiing... Thank you for the lovely noise. I'm not sure how you'd record it better, but I'll certainly be your guinea pig!

I love hearing the ravens. I have some on my site as well -- it's hard to record them but as someone who hears ravens everyday, I knew exactly what I was hearing! Very, very cool!

Wonderful sounds and I almost said "I couldn't get the picture to work" but then watched again and saw them way up high in the sky! No matter what equipment you get, when they are that high up in the sky all you can capture is their sounds! Ok, going to play the video again! Also, blip.tv's site seem to show the video's a little clearer than youtube!

To me, they sounded similar to Sandhill Cranes. I've never heard a flock of Ravens before, just one or two together. Almost primeaval.

I just discovered your blog through Lynne's "Hasty Brook." I look forward to exploring your far-northern world.

I've been watching the Ravens for the past few days also. I think with the cold temps they have been a little more noticeably active.

Great sound track. Odd sounds, for sure, but very intriguing!

Well, that was pretty neat Trixie! I don't think I've ever heard ravens make a sound like that before. It was cool that you were able to capture it.

You were able to get across the sounds well enough with what you did.-Ravens are cool!
